Head Lice

Head Lice (aka - Pediculosis)
Head Lice should be suspected when there is intense itching and scratching of the scalp and the back of the neck. If you look very closely at the scalp and throughout the hair, you may see very small, rapidly crawling insects about 1/8 inch long and brown to grayish-white eggs (nits) firmly attached anywhere on the hairstrand. Although these nits may look like dandruff, dandruff can easily be removed from the hair while nits are not easily removed.

All students of the Anson ISD are screened when symptoms are exhibited. If live lice are found in your child's hair, you will be contacted and they will be excluded from school. They may be readmitted after having been treated with a medicated lice shampoo, the product box and/or bottle has been presented to the school nurse and the student is checked by the school nurse. A separate bottle MUST be used for each member of the family and follow the instruction on that bottle, completely. If nits are found, it is recommended that they be manually removed to prevent re-infestation.

Your child will be rechecked when he/she returns to school (presumably the next day) and again in 7-10 days, after the second treatment (which is essential in eliminating head lice infestations). Parent will be notified and the student shall be sent home again for treatment if lice and/or nits are found. Students absent more than 48 hours will be considered truant.

Head lice are not a serious medical condition, but need to have diligent parental cooperation to control.
