Hello, my name is Amy McKnight and welcome to 8th grade English. This year promises to offer many learning opportunities. My goal is to prepare students not only for high school but the world beyond.
Our class will explore different literary genres such as: drama, biography, mystery, fiction, and nonfiction. We will investigate themes from literature, for example, "No Place Like Home", "Fantastic Capers and Mischief Makers", "Free to Be", "Faces of Dignity", and "Hair-Raising Tales".
Student's will have opportunities to improve grammar and writing skills by examining different styles and types of writing, parts of speech, and sentence structure.
We will use computers and interactive technology in the classroom. Students will learn to work in Microsoft Word and Powerpoint and will produce a product from these programs.
I believe students should be responsible for bringing their supplies to class, arriving on time, and turning in their homework. I also believe that students need to be able to read and write in cursive handwriting. Cursive handwriting promotes the flow of words in the writing process and better reading fluency.
We will be doing a project every six weeks. I will hand this out the first week of the 6 weeks. Students have 1 week to change their library book. This will allow plenty of time to complete the project. The project is due on the assigned date. No late projects will be accepted and plagiarism is not allowed. Please check with your child frequently about his progress on his project. Most importantly, the project will be 25% of their 6 week grade. Tests will account for 25% of the grade. If a student fails a test, they have the opportunity to retake the test for a maximum grade of 70. Retakes or corrections must be done within 3 school days. Homework will count 50%.
I look forward to having your child in my class. Please contact me at (325)823-2771 or at mcknightamy@hotmail.com.
